Gardening and Herbs
Herbal Enthusiast and Master Gardener Volunteer Graduate (‘98): Becky’s love and enthusiasm for herbs is the seed that sprouted her family’s Herbal Treasures of Hickory Hollow dream. Studying herbs since 1988, she is a garden writer, featured public speaker, instructor on herb and garden topics.
A lifetime member of the Herb Society of America (HSA), Becky’s submission was included in the Herb Society’s Essential Guide to Growing and Cooking with Herbs, a collaborative book published in 2007, now in third reprint. Book sale proceeds benefit the National Herb Garden located in Washington, DC.
In 2000, she was instrumental in forming the Carolina Foothills Unit of the Herb Society of America. Becky continues to be involved in special herb-related community projects and public events, helping people of all ages discover the wonder and many uses of herbs.
Creator and editor of the first Catawba Valley Master Gardener news letter, The Grapevine, she also developed the area’s first GROW-IT! workshop gardening program for area children through the Catawba County Extension Office. In 2002, Ms. Cortino presented “Fun with Herbs,” an 8-week interactive online class she created and designed for adults, while serving as admin for a global online gardening forum.
Becky studied Integrative Aromatherapy in an Integrated Aromatherapy degree program with The Institute of Integrative Aromatherapy, mentored by well-known author instructor-practitioner Valerie Gennari Cooksley, RN, co-founder of IIA, and Flora Medica owner.
Her ongoing research and writing about herbs led to the creation of the Herbal Treasures of Hickory Hollow Web Garden. Planted in 1999, the carefully-tended website featured 170+ herbally-infused pages, strolled by over 100,000 visitors worldwide within just a few years.
The love of herbs took Becky down yet another garden path — offering unique botanical arts, nature crafting, cooking workshops, special garden events in Herbal Treasures Of Hickory Hollow Garden, at public and private venues.
